Who are we?

Kian Schi was founded in the 1950s as an open-minded judo club. We have never owned our own dojo, but have always used schools and community buildings. Since the 1970s, we have been located in the "Oase", a primary school in the South-West of Den Haag. Most of the trainings take place there, but there are also trainings in Rijswijk (in the "Petrusschool") and in Leidschendam (in the "Emmaüsschool" and in sports centre "De Fluit").

Main purpose of our club is recreative judo, but we also take part in competitions. We train to reach advanced levels. Our senseis have third and fifth dans.

In our club, we stress mutual respect and cooperation, both on the tatami and beyond. Competition and winning are only of value when keeping this in mind. Competition is meant for assessing your own proficiency with the help of others, rather than for subduing opponents.

Judo is a game of skills. Many things are allowed - you are allowed to throw, control, clamp, and strangle - but you must always keep in mind that no damage is to be inflicted. As a rule, people are not meant to break bones or loose consciousness. This means that techniques must be applied with skill and in moderation. It also means that the person to whom the techniques are applied must be proficient in falling safely (ukemi), and also know when to give up. Judo is a game for two, where both participants give and take.

Classes are composed based on age and skills. The minimum age is six years. From this age onwards, children are able to cooperate and to understand instructions.
There is no maximum age for judo. It is possible to practice judo to an advanced age - or begin practicing.

Our club has professional teachers that provide lessons. The other activities of our club are supported by the members: the exams, club tournaments, and the sports and games weekend (during Whitsuntide weekend).
